MARLBOROUGH — After suffering its first loss of the 2025 season, the Marlborough Senior Babe Ruth squad bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, holding off a late rally to defeat Medway, 3-2, in a tense road matchup. With the win, Marlborough improves to 6-1, tying Bellingham for first place in the standings with 12 points.
The game opened as a pitchers’ duel between Marlborough ace Tyler Moore and Medway’s Johnny Farrell. Moore was dominant early, retiring the first six batters he faced while striking out two. Meanwhile, Farrell matched Moore nearly pitch-for-pitch, keeping Marlborough scoreless through the first three frames.
In the top of the fourth, Marlborough finally broke through. Vlad Nova sparked the offense with a single, then stole second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Andrew Talcoff came through with a clutch RBI single to put Marlborough up 1-0. Moments later, Frank Davis drove a deep fly ball to center that the Medway outfielder couldn’t corral, allowing Talcoff to score. A passed ball a couple of batters later brought home another run, giving Marlborough a 3-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings of play.
That appeared to be more than enough for Moore, who continued to stifle the Medway offense. He struck out two more in both the fifth and sixth innings. Moore racked up seven strikeouts over six shutout innings, showcasing pinpoint control and a sharp breaking ball.
But the seventh inning nearly unraveled Marlborough’s night.
After after a hit-by-pitch and an error, Medway mounted a rally. Farrell and Jason Bedard delivered RBI singles, cutting the lead to 3-2 and putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position with only one out. With the pressure mounting, Moore locked in. He induced a shallow flyout to right-center, and struck out Anthony Lum swinging on a breaking ball to seal the win in dramatic fashion.
Nova, who had a hit and a run in the win, helped Marlborough remain the highest-scoring team in Central Mass with 54 runs scored and a +31 run differential.
The Panthers, now tied atop the standings with Bellingham, look to keep the momentum going. This mid-season thriller proved why Marlborough remains a team to watch in Central Mass., with dominant pitching, timely hitting, and just enough defense to hold off a fierce late-game challenge.
