Poker History Being Made in the 2025 WSOP Main Event

A 30-year drought could end late Sunday as Leo Margets is closing in on becoming the first woman since Barbara Enright to reach the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event final table.

Enright, a Poker Hall of Famer, is the only woman ever to make the final nine in poker’s most prestigious event, which she did in 1995 with a fifth-place finish for $114,180. She might soon no longer be part of a one-woman club.

Margets Making History

Margets entered Day 8 sitting in 15th place out of 24 remaining players in what is the third-largest WSOP Main Event in history (9,735 entries). She’d hover around the 17.8 million chips she began the session with for quite some time. But she’d slowly build her stack up to around 35 big blinds with the blinds at 500,000/1,000,000.

The Spaniard would then finally find an opportunity to make a move, just after the dinner break. Margets raised to 2,000,000 from the hijack with J♦J♣. Sergio Veloso, holding A♦K♥ in the small blind, moved all in for 32,700,000, just under Margets’ stack. The original raiser made the call, and both players turned over their cards to discover they were about to race for a ton of money.

The flop came out Q♣A♣9♠, bad news for Margets, who entered the tournament with just over $2 million in live tournament cashes. But she did pick up some help on the 3♣ turn, giving her a flush draw to go along with her two set outs. Margets would spike the 2♣ to hit the flush on the river, which sent Veloso home in 16th place for $450,000.

Margets, on the other hand, was up to 71,000,000 chips after Level 37. Braxton Dunaway (101,900,000) was the only player with a larger stack. Michael Mizrachi and Kenny Hallaert, both seeking a second WSOP Main Event final table appearance, were still standing at the time of publishing.

Margets could make poker history before the session concludes. Annie Duke (2000) and Gaelle Baumann (2012) each bubbled the final table. Kristen Foxen went on a memorable run last year before bowing out in 13th place.

The Main Event will play down to the final nine before Day 8 concludes, and then will return to action with the first of two final table days on Tuesday. Margets is guaranteed at least $450,000, and the next pay jump to $560,250 occurs at 13th place. The winner, to be crowned on Wednesday, will take home $10 million.
