PHILADELPHIA — Hopefully Wednesday’s doubleheader between the Phillies and Padres ends earlier than the one they played exactly 32 years ago at Veterans Stadium.
Tuesday night’s game between Philadelphia and San Diego at Citizens Bank Park was postponed because of rain.
The teams will play Game 1 of a split doubleheader at 1:05 p.m. ET. Game 2 will begin at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Mick Abel will start Game 1 for Philadelphia, followed by Cristopher Sánchez in the nightcap. The Padres will counter with Nick Pivetta and Dylan Cease, respectively.
The Phillies and Padres played an historic doubleheader on July 2, 1993. Game 2 ended later than any other game in Major League history at 4:40 a.m. It did not start until 1:30 a.m. because Game 1 was interrupted three times by rain, which caused nearly six hours of delays.
Phillies closer Mitch Williams ended the madness in Game 2, hitting an opposite-field single to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Phils a walk-off win.
“The game is over! On an RBI hit by Mitchy Pooh!” Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas yelled as Pete Incaviglia scored the winning run.
Tickets for Tuesday night’s game will be valid for Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader, with gates opening at 5:15 p.m. The Xfinity Fireworks Show will take place after the game.
Gates for Game 1 will open at 1:05 p.m. The Nemours Children’s Health Kids Run the Bases promotion has been canceled. Fans are encouraged to visit phillies.com/postponement for more information.
