Frances Tiafoe responds when asked if he thinks he can actually win Wimbledon this year

He has suffered so many early exits, and it’s sad to see such huge potential fail to make its mark on the tour.

However, as a man for the big occasion, he shocked many by reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, and will be hoping to back that up with another solid showing at Wimbledon.

Asked if he genuinely believes he can go all the way, Frances Tiafoe answered with brutal honesty.

Speaking with Tennis Channel, they did not pull any punches with their first question, asking the American if he truly felt like he could win the entire event.

Tiafoe was characteristically confident, noting: ’For sure! When I look at the majors, sure why not? We have here and The Open where I definitely come in thinking why can’t I do it. I genuinely believe that.

‘But you can’t think about that until you take care of the rounds before and now I am just looking forward to who I have got to play next.

‘I know they are battling right now. But just take it day by day and then good things happen.

He was then asked to rate his first-round performance, continuing: ’Pretty good. I thought I was pretty good overall. I only broke him once, would like to serve at a little higher percentage but I loved the amount of points I won on my first serve.

‘Other than that it was pretty good on my side.’

Tiafoe then finished by outlining just why he loves Wimbledon so much, concluding by claiming: ‘Just playing on grass. It’s just fun.

‘You can play the right way. I can serve, volley. I can come to the net and use creativity. Intangibles work really well.

‘And it’s just the history. Wearing all white. Everything looks so clean. Everything is so proper. It’s pretty cool.’

Having cruised through his opening-round match against Elmer Møller, things will certainly get much tougher for the American in the second round against Cam Norrie.

Facing one of the hometown heroes, fresh from an impressive win over the in-form Roberto Bautista Agut, the former British number one poses plenty of threat to Tiafoe.

However, he has won their last two meetings, despite the two having never met on grass before.

Both have enjoyed success on this surface over the years, but it is Norrie who was once a Wimbledon semi-finalist.

Tiafoe, at his best, should comfortably win such a match. His best, frustratingly, has become a rare sight over the last few years.

Tiafoe suffered a shock early defeat at Queen’s earlier this month, but has bounced back well.

Hopefully after his comfortable first-round win on Monday, he is now ready to enjoy a deep run at the All-England Club, with the highest-ranked seed in his quarter, Holger Rune, having already been dumped out.
