Former Cincinnati Bearcat quarterback Desmond Ridder is reportedly returning to the Queen City.After throwing for over 10,000 yards over a four-year career in Clifton, Ridder has reportedly signed to compete for the backup job under Joe Burrow, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.Ridder was the second quarterback drafted in the 2022 draft, taken 74th overall by the Atlanta Falcons.However, his stint with the team that drafted him was brief: He appeared in just 19 games (starting 17), throwing for 3,544 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also was intercepted 12 times.In the lead up to the 2024 campaign, the Falcons traded Ridder to Arizona, in exchange for wide receiver Rondale Moore.Before the 2024 season began, Ridder was cut by the Cardinals. He later signed with the Las Vegas Raiders and played in six games, starting one, and threw for 458 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns.The Bengals barely dipped into the depth chart under center last year, with Joe Burrow taking all but five snaps last season, according to Pro Football Reference.Jake Browning, who succeeded as a starter when Burrow went down with injury in 2023, is on track to serve as Burrow’s main back up again this season.Ridder will most likely compete for the third-string role with players such as Logan Woodside and incoming rookie Payton Thorne.A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Ridder never lost a game at Nippert Stadium, going 26-0, and ended his collegiate career with the third-most wins by a quarterback in college football history (44). He also owns the UC record for touchdown passes, with 87.
