Eastbound I-70 back open near Greenfield exit after 5-hour closure


The incident was reported shortly before 5 a.m. July 3 around eight miles east of the Greenfield exit.

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — All lanes of eastbound Interstate 70 were closed in Hancock County Thursday morning following a semi fire.

The incident was reported shortly before 5 a.m. July 3 near the 112 mile-marker on I-70, around eight miles east of the Greenfield (State Road 9) exit.

An alert from INDOT, citing the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, said all lanes would be closed for an unknown amount of time following the incident. Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles in the area as of 9 a.m.

In an update around 6 a.m., Hancock County 911 said eastbound I-70 was being closed at the Greenfield exit, with the closure/delays expected to be around four hours. Pictures shared by the agency showed a semi heavily damaged by fire.

In another update around 7:30 a.m., the agency said one eastbound lane had reopened, though a lengthy backup remained. The agency said the best detour is eastbound U.S. 40 from the Mt. Comfort Road exit.

All lanes were back open as of 10:10 a.m., according to INDOT and Hancock County 911.
