The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing around 13 miles of Colorado Highway 141 south of Gateway next week.
The project will resurface the highway from Larsen Canyon just south of Gateway to Turner Gulch to the north of Gateway and will include asphalt overlay paving, guardrail replacement and bridge deck repairs at four locations, according to a new release. The contact completing the work is Elam Construction.
“CO 141 is a scenic and historically significant route that winds through the western region of the state,” CDOT Regional Transportation Director Jason Smith stated in the release. “In addition to supporting tourism, the highway serves as a vital link for connecting rural communities. The new surface will make this route more reliable.”
According to CDOT, the new asphalt surface will increase the lifespan of the highway and add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The new guardrails will also meet new safety standards.
Daytime work hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Drivers should expect up to 20-minute delays. Driving lanes will also be narrowed in the project area and the speed limit will be reduced to 40 miles per hour, according to the release.
I-70 CONGESTION EXPECTED
The Interstate 70 corridor is expected to see a high-volume traffic during the holiday weekend.
Travel volumes are expected to peak starting Thursday afternoon, and continue through Sunday evening, a CDOT news release said.
To help ease the traffic congestion, CDOT will suspend all construction and maintenance work across the state starting at noon on Thursday and continue through Monday morning.
