You don’t see many baseball gloves that look like this anymore.
In the bottom of the fifth inning of Monday night’s game against the Guardians, Astros designated hitter Cooper Hummel lofted a high fly ball down the right-field line. The ball skied its way into the stands at Daikin Park, where a fan made a slick catch. And as it turns out, the grab was even more impressive than originally thought.
As the fan hoisted both of his arms into the air for a celebratory round of high-fives, he revealed that his glove was far from modern.
“What kind of glove is that?” asked Todd Kalas, the Astros TV play-by-play announcer.
“It’s barely a glove,” added color analyst Geoff Blum. “It’s the first glove ever made. It makes a catch, and it’ll be used as a pillow later.”
Pillow or not, the fan’s vintage glove certainly did the trick on Monday night.
