Alabama football legend AJ McCarron says this game will ultimately decide the QB battle

As Alabama football showed two seasons ago, the quarterback battle won’t necessarily be settled in Week 1.

The starter in the first game is not guaranteed the starting job all season.

But in the mind of former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, the job can be secured permanently by the end of September.

“The Georgia game is the game,” McCarron said in June on his podcast. “You go out and play well that game, it’s your job for the rest of the year.”

Simpson is the frontrunner heading into the summer. The coaching staff has indicated as much. But he hasn’t locked down the job yet. He remains in competition with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell.

Preseason practices will ultimately determine who takes the first snap in the opener against Florida State.

“Florida State is a tough place to play,” McCarron said. “It does get loud there at times. It’s a great challenge for Ty (Simpson) and the offense to go down there and be successful. He has a couple games after that. Week 2, ULM. Week 3, Wisconsin. The Week 5 game is where you really can solidify the job vs. Georgia. I think you solidify the job and take out all doubt, questions, and any controversy playing well leading up to that game. But they’re probably going to rotate some of those guys. Austin Mack, Keelon Russell will probably get some rotation in there in some of those games as well leading up to it.”

But a strong performance against Georgia on the road would squash any doubts about a competition.
