Hit-making pop star cancels tour just weeks after announcing it

It sounds like Ava Max’s “Don’t Click Play” tour has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The pop singer has cancelled her fall tour, which was on track to visit North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe between early September and mid-November.

The news arrived on Thursday, less than three weeks after Max announced the dates in mid-June.

The tour was originally scheduled to launch in North America following the release of Max’s third album “Don’t Click Play,” which arrives August 22. Among the axed dates is a Boston show at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Max made an announcement via Instagram stories about “pushing back” the tour, although most of the shows are listed as “cancelled” on Ticketmaster. Similarly, no show dates are listed on Max’s website under “tour.”

“Pushing back my tour is [the] most difficult decision I’ve had to make, but when I perform for you, it has to be of a standard that I’m happy with, and it’s just not there yet,” she wrote.

“Being on stage is my favorite thing in the world,” Max’s note added. “In order to put on a show that you all deserve, I need more time. I promise you all it will be worth the wait. I love you all and can’t wait to see you soon. SOON, I PROMISE.”

Max previously scored a Top 10 hit in the Billboard Hot 100 with her song “Sweet But Psycho,” which debuted in 2018 and has amassed over 1.8 billion Spotify streams. Other popular songs in Max’s catalog include “Kings & Queens” — another tune with a billion-plus streams — and “The Motto,” her 2021 collaboration with Tiësto.
